People We Love - Georgia Harley

The first time I met Georgia was at a cafe in Surry Hills early last year, where she talked to me about her business Caring Canary. After our first meeting, I felt inspired by such a wonderful entrepreneur and kind friend who is making the world a better place one care package at a time. Caring Canary is an online store where you can send a unique and personalised care package to someone special whatever the occasion. These carefully curated range of Caring Canary care packages are sure to brighten someone’s day and make them feel special, loved and cared for.

What motivated you to start your own business?

I was never one of those people who knew what career they wanted to pursue from a young age. As I journeyed through life I started to realise where my strengths and weaknesses lay, but I never really knew what profession I was best suited for. Prior to starting Caring Canary, I was an Associate Producer on some of Australia’s highest rating tv shows, including Bondi Vet and Australia’s Next Top Model. I loved the fast paced, dynamic nature of the business, but it never really fulfilled me. I also worked for one of Australia’s largest charities for a year. This satisfied my soul but the 9-5 office culture wasn’t really for me.

Then in 2012, my world turned upside down. My dad, my hero, was diagnosed with cancer and given less than a year to live. I quit my all-consuming tv job and knew I just wanted to be with him and my mum every single day and try to bring some light to their very dark days. Sometimes this was in the form of gifts, other times just small gestures, or reading an inspiring quote or poem, or simply just by being there to make them laugh or smile.

I saw time and time again dad’s friends, and even our family members, not knowing what to do or say. Some brought flowers, others bought chocolates or grog even though they knew these seemed trivial (and to be honest, useless). In this terrible time I saw a hole in the market for a service that provided people with high quality, thought out, personalised gifts to give people they cared about.

How would you describe Caring Canary in one sentence?

Caring Canary connects people and cultivates happiness through premium, meaningful and convenient gift-giving.

Is there a favourite care package you have?

Oooh good question! This changes depending on what mood I’m in. During a busy week, the Her Survival Kit  is a favourite. It has organic herbal tea and our eco-friendly ceramic travel mug to keep tea (or coffee) warm during long days and late nights. The healthy treats and The Collective magazine (my favourite magazine because it’s beautifully designed and full of inspiring stories) are a good incentive to take time out to relax and unwind. And the little hottie is a super cute heat pack (it doubles as a cool pack too) and is just like receiving a big warm hug. If I’m in a more indulgent mood, the Keep Calm Kit  is a winner. It has soft and gooey Rose and Vanilla Turkish delight, a beautifully scented soy wax candle, organic herbal tea, a calming lavender and flaxseed eye rest pillow and nourishing organic body care products (a raw sugar body scrub and organic moisturiser which make your skin feel ah-mazing!). It delights all the senses.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

From a business perspective, that would have to be Lisa Messenger (The Collective Hub Editor-In-Chief), Naomi Simson (RedBalloon Founder) and Arianna Huffington (Huffington Post Founder). They inspired me to be authentic, to find and pursue my purpose, to have a holistic view of success that prioritises happiness and wellbeing. They inspire me to use business as a platform to have a positive impact on the world.

On a personal level, it would have to be my late dad and my late nan. They were so selfless and always radiating positivity and compassion. They were shining examples of what a good role model is and their legacy inspires me to be a better human each and every day.

What’s something that may surprise others to know about you?

I have rebuilt kindergartens in East Timor.

Your favourite quote?

‘Although every day may not be good, there’s something good in every day.’ Reminds me to keep focused on the positives and practice gratitude, even for the smallest things.

‘Jump and the net will appear.’ Very rarely will all our ducks line up for it to be the ‘perfect’ time to start something. Sometimes we just have to take a risk and trust that the universe wil look after us.

Ingredient spotlight: Calendula

Ingredient spotlight: Calendula

You may come across calendula in the ingredient list of some of our products (52 of them, in fact!) and wonder what it is. Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is a flowering plant from the daisy family. Though they look similar, do not confuse it with the common ornamental marigold, which is of a different genus. Calendula is native to Asia, Western Europe, Macaronesia and the Mediterranean.

Calendula has one of the longest histories of use of any flower in skincare and, traditionally had both culinary and medicinal value. What’s more, Romans and Greeks used the flower in ceremonies and, in India, it is considered sacred and has been used to decorate statues of Hindu deities since early times.

Today, the yellow-orange flower is still used in a variety of ways. Medicinally, pharmacological studies have suggested that calendula extracts have antiviral, anti-genotoxix and anti-inflammatory properties. In herbal medicine, calendula has a number of topical uses, including treating acne and reducing inflammation. Much of the healing properties of calendula come from its high levels of carotenoids (vitamin A-like compounds). It also contains oil-soluble sterols that help plump the skin and keep it thick.

How can you benefit from calendula?

Calendula can be found as an ingredient in many skincare products and teas. Obviously, we recommend using organic and natural products where possible, and stock a wide range of products that contain calendula. For the full list of our products, just type ‘calendula’ in the search box located at the top of our site.
